I have included here an update on the exciting new facilities of the Washington School of Photography (WSP). WSP has been providing quality education in photography for the Washington DC area for over 35 years, and I have been a faculty member there for over 30 years now, and am the Technical Director. This update describes our new school building and state-of-the-art photographic facilities. Please enjoy the information about our school, and we hope to see you there in the near future. The NEW Washington School of Photography

On the first weekend of March, 2013, the Washington School of Photography (WSP) will move into our new and greatly expanded school building at 12276 Wilkins Ave., Rockville, MD 20852. After almost 20 years on Rugby Ave. in Bethesda, MD, we have now outgrown our old building and are moving about 5 miles north to the Twinbrook area of Rockville. The new facility is very easily accessible from Rockville Pike, Twinbrook Parkway, and Randolph Ave. It is also within easy walking distance of the Twinbrook Metro Station of the Red Line subway.

WSP has been developing photographers for over 35 years. A 501(c)3 non-profit organization, WSP is committed to providing photographic education from the beginning photographer to the aspiring professional, as well as to established professional photographers looking to enhance their knowledge base. Each year, WSP provides instruction to more than 2000 members of the general public through 140 short courses from introduction to digital photography to advanced studio lighting. The Professional Photography Program is our flagship curriculum, a one-year course of study leading to a Certificate in Professional Photography, and is approved by the Maryland Board of Higher Education.

Our new building is over 25,000 square feet in size, with WSP using about 17,000 square feet, almost tripling the size of our current location. This new WSP facility has three large photo studios totaling more than 2800 sq. ft., six classrooms, a large reception area, multiple offices and administrative areas, conference rooms and lounges, a large public darkroom area, plus a full time photography gallery. The building property also has more than 45 off-street parking spaces included with the building. The school will be open 7 days a week, including evening hours during the week for classes and workshops.

An interesting concept that is included in the WSP building space is seven "incubator spaces", offices for emerging professional photographers just starting out to rent for limited periods of time for use while they develop their professional clientele, and until they are ready to strike out on their own. These spaces come with access to a nearby conference room, kitchen area, and a specified number of hours in the school studios. WSP invites emerging and professional photographers interested in a cost-effective and convenient workspace to join WSP personnel for a guided tour of our new facilities in Rockville, MD. Interested persons should call WSP at 301-654-1998 to schedule a tour. Spaces will be shown by appointment only.

We hope that these completely renovated and ADA compliant facilities will serve the expanding needs for our many photographic workshops and our professional program classes for a number of years. Center>Capitol Arts Network

The school will also share space in the 25,000 square foot building with the multimedia Capitol Arts Network (CAN), the Washington area’s fastest-growing organization for professional and emerging artists. CAN is a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating a community environment in which established and emerging artists from across the Washington, D.C., region can come together to work, develop and share resources, expertise, marketing opportunities and community outreach. Its CAN Studios Center – educational, business and gallery complex will be located on the third floor of the Washington School of Photography building at 12276 Wilkins Ave. in Rockville, Md. Over 30 artists have already committed to the 33 resident artist studio spaces available. With two studios spaces still available we will soon move to a waiting list for resident artists. There are also a number of placements still available for our Affiliate Artist program – allowing emerging artists and mid-career artists to work daily in an engaging and energizing studio environment, alongside the Resident Artists of CAN Studios.
