What makes your Modelling Portfolio stand out?
Your portfolio is the first impression as a model to present yourself to potential clients. Modeling is a business based on an individual’s first impression of you through your images.
Every agency, art director, photographer or other potential client you contact will request to see your portfolio, comp card or images before they proceed with interviewing you. You only have one chance to make a first impression.
Your portfolio should include a variety of images, looks and information. Your personal stats should including height, weight, dress & shoe size and any previous experience you may have.
As for images to be considered for modeling you should ideally include the following images as your core:
• Headshot, facing forward, no makeup, relaxed face
• Headshot, facing forward, no makeup, smiles
• Profile headshot, no makeup, hair pulled back from face
• Full body shot in swimwear, facing forward, arms at sides
• Full body shot in fitted clothing, facing forward, arms at sides
All agencies have different requirements for submissions, but if you include the five images above you will cover the majority of agency requirements.
From this base develop your personality and character shots. These are the “WOW” and character images that grab the attention of your potential client by showing your range of emotions and ability to portray various characters.
Bear in mind that most people will remember the image they believe to be your weakest presentation. This makes it paramount that your portfolio only contains strong and powerful “WOW” images. More images is not always the best route to take. The quality of your images will make a much stronger impression than the quantity of images you present.
Hiring a professional photographer can be expensive. We all understand this but remember low quality, poor composition and bad lighting will reflect on your first impression with potential clients. Saving some investment capital upfront may cost your tremendously in the long term.
Remember the purpose behind a modeling portfolio is not to show how attractive you are, but to provide samples of your ability to portray the personality or character the client is seeking.
Q) Must I model in lingerie, nude or swimwear for my portfolio?
A) The simple answer to this is absolutely not. Set your comfort limits upfront and stick to them. If you are not comfortable in a costume or situation your images will portray your unease. Don’t let a photographer convince you these images must be included. While we suggest a full body shot in swimwear for your base five images changes can be made to meet your age, religious / culture and body type.
Q) Do I need professional make-up and hair?
A) Depends on your budget and whom you are marketing your portfolio too. If you are seeking to just forward images to Agencies in search of working with them the five images listed above without make up may be all you need. If you are looking to promote yourself directly to clients and ant to present the strongest images possible then we strongly recommend a make-up artist. A great make-up artist is worth their fees in gold. They will make your images stand out from the crowd.
Q) Must all my images be in color?
A) Be creative in your images. By mixing color with black and white imagery you will create a variety of “moods” and “expressions” throughout you portfolio. A few strong black and white images will grab the attention of the viewer and help reinforce your creativity ad characters.
The first suggestion I make to all new models is have fun. Your excitement, joy and desire to succeed will show in your images.
Think outside of the box, unusual ideas and photo shoots will grab a viewer’s attention and separate your portfolio from the others on may review. Set your goals and excitations then plan how to achieve them.
