Member Profile: Vin Weathermon

An Irvine local, I'm a semi-professional photography nut. Gina and I enjoy photography outings with our two dogs, Pancake and Tony. My kid Laurie is a great photographer, and has an eye better than mine. But I love photography more than anybody I know. Photography is my weakness and my strength. I love to shoot, I love to create, I love to make moments last perhaps generations...even if just sitting in cyberspace. I like fixing what I couldn't do in-camera, with my dual Mac monitors making my eyes water in the wee hours. Photography consumes my spare time and hard-earned cash on expensive gear. Photography needs constant feeding to keep atop of new techniques, software, printing, papers, color profiles, video capture, editing and all the stuff that pours into one's saturated skullcap. Meeting with other people who are afflicted with this mental infirmity puts some of that overload to good use, while enabling my own creativity to stir. Therefore, the club Photo Deviants of Orange County is a good place to be.

I have a preference for photography for different reasons. I am not doing what the successful photographers advise, focus on a "look" and become synonymous with that look, become a "brand" to market with your photo rep. I can't figure out what I like the most, that I'd shoot every single day. Except maybe artistic nudes...ok, yes, I could shoot them every single day. Ask George Mann, my internet friend for many years now who fills his retirement with an endless stream of beautiful fine art work.

Anyway, I digress further: I love every type of photography there is so far.

Artistic/Glamour nude - Hands down, challenging, rewarding and difficult. If you do elaborate stuff like planning a set design, buying set materials, fabrication, wardrobe, hair, makeup and all that, it is exhausting work. And then you have to be lucky enough to have a nude model available to beautifully pose, create shadows on her form. Women are just amazing creatures.

Macros - love them bugs. A macro lens can glean cool stuff just about anywhere. Insects are so amazing and beautiful, and surprising on a full sized print.

Still Life - love shooting old stuff, antiques, buildings, etc. Some of my favorites are the Wickenburg, AZ goldmine called "Vulture Mine".

Landscape - I love them but I'm not as good at them as some of my friends. I have not tried HDR yet but I want to.

Portraiture - Is hard, like weddings but more rewarding. I like when a person thinks you've made them look great. Or bizarre. Or naked.

Kids - Being a dad, this is some of the funnest photography ever because the pressure is off. The subjects just have to be reasonably contained. They look cute no matter what you do. And newborns just sit and sleep while you photograph macros of their tiny body.

Editorial - now this is super fun when you have interesting subjects and can tell the story (because it's worth telling.)

Aerial - while technically I have taken photographs from airplanes, I was never harnessed and hanging outside an airplane with its door removed. I will get to that someday.

Underwater - So freaking awesome. To dive is wonderful, to relive it often is really cool.

Food - Products - you get to control everything, a still life on steroids.

Automotive - something of a scale I would love to try; I did a motorcycle and it was hard as hell.
