A Close-Up of "CameraArts" Publisher and Managing Editor Tim Anderson
As publisher and managing editor of "CameraArts" magazine, Tim Anderson, OMP Member #2460, wants to extend an open invitation to all the female
models on One Model Place.
"We are always looking for exceptional talent for our magazine. Models visiting the Albuquerque area can contact me
to see if there are any assignments available for figure/artistic nude work."
Of course, Anderson doesn't want to leave out the many fine visual artists listed on OMP.
"Our publication takes submissions from photographers, and its guidelines are posted on the site.
The first thing my art director and I look for are images the immediately speak to us, without any captions or accompanying text.
We want the photograph to be the message. We look at the picture first, and then we might read submitted text and tech info.
But the image ALWAYS comes first, even in the documentary work we publish. "
In addition to the print publication, readers can find "CameraArts" online.
"We have worked very hard, recently, to better position our website (www.cameraarts.com) to be more accessible, and user-friendly.
To that end, we now have a free e-newsletter (FRAMES) and a blog. Everything is used to drive traffic to the web, so that we can
better enhance our presence there, and be more attractive to potential advertisers."
The publisher originally fell into photography more than 30 years ago after taking pictures for a telephone company he was
working with in the northwest. After moving to Albuquerque, New Mexico, Anderson began receiving freelance assignments in
photography and writing.
"I picked up a local free employment paper and saw an ad for a layout person for a small publisher. Soon after I applied I got the job.
Two years later, in December of 2004, I ended up acquiring ‘CameraArts' magazine from the previous owner."
Anderson's own work is also on display in a new book entitled "Poser."
"The book is for any artist, photographer or otherwise, who works with a model. It is also targeted to models who may need a
bit of guidance when it comes to working with an artist. As the subtitle indicates, ‘Poser' is "a sketchbook of ideas for the
artist or model." With more than 100 illustrations, and a few of my own fine art nude photographs included, it is designed to
be a simple approach to a very challenging task. There will be more than a dozen comments from photographers like OMP's own Doc Glidewell,
as well as Jeff Dunas, Lucien Clergue, Steve Anchell, and others. On many of the images I will also include descriptive text about the work."
The book can be purchased for a special pre-publication price by visiting www.cameraarts.com/store.php
He recently participated in an "Imagination & Dreams" workshop.
"I first talked to Santa Fe Workshops Director, Reid Callanan,
about doing an article on one of his workshops. After a few emails between us it was decided that Elizabeth Opalenik's workshop
'Imagination & Dreams' would suit me best. At first it was just going to be an assignment, but when I told Elizabeth I was going
to monitor her workshop for an article, she said that wasn't possible.
'If you're going to be in the class,' she said, 'you're going to have to work twice as hard as the others.' It was a life-changing
experience, photographically."
Anderson offers his take on how digital photography has changed fine art photography.
"I think digital photography has made it all more accessible. With any technology, there will always be innovation as well as evolution.
And along with that, there are the good, the bad, and the ugly… until it all gets sorted out, which is what is happening now.
There are many photographers who were poised to break through the ‘ceiling' because their work was incredible.
Now, I've even forgotten who they were. In the end, I think the chaff takes care of itself, and the quality of the image reigns."
As he continues to fine-tune "CameraArts," Anderson and his staff are committed to making it the best possible fine art photography
magazine available.
"We hope it will continue to embody the essence of fine art photography. In the future, we will periodically
showcase documentary work as well as pictures from many different arenas including, but not limited to sports, fashion, and glamour.
In the end, however, all photographs will continue to be in the realm of fine art."
His relationship with OneModelPlace.com has helped Anderson promote the magazine as well as his personal career.
"OMP has kept me, as a photographer, abreast of how the medium is controlled by change, and how, as in life, we have absolutely no control over it.
With an OMP number of #2460, it's obvious I have been registered for quite a few years. I would also like to add that I continue to be very impressed
at how the staff at OMP continually breaks new ground in the area of online promotion. From the time I first signed up,
the site has really turned into a city of its own creation, much more than just a cyber-city."
