Its been a pretty dull day here, but still no snow. Its the first time in my life that I can remember a Christmas and first 11 days of January without snow. In fact I can't remember a January without snow, let alone 40 degree tempatures. Anyways, tonights subject is near and dear to me.
Communication in the form I am referring to is purely on the models end. Models need three things to be models; 1. Reliable transportation 2. The will & desire to be a model 3. A working telephone You cannot be a model without the ability to communicate via the telephone. And just owning a phone isn't enough, you have to use it. As a photographer and as an agent, it is not my job to call and check in with models. It is squarely the models responsibility to check in and to call, and no, email is not good enough. Too many models rely on email as their form of communication, yet they don't even check that daily. You may find this difficult to believe, but I make sure I am always at home from 10pm to 2am, and I always answer my phone when a call is placed during that time. If you say you are going to call, then do it.........

Well its a great day to be alive, and an even better day when you get the mail and you have money. Thats what i got today, an email telling me my Paypal dispute over a broken flash ended in my favor and I'll get my money back. Patience and perserverance wins 95% of the time. So where was I, oh yeah Professionalism.
The definition of professionalism is the expertness characteristic of a professional person. I really wish they made it more informative, but thats what it says.
What it means to me in the modeling industry is the way that a model treats a photographer and how a photographer treats a model. If you don't know what would be deemed professional or unprofessional let me give you some examples.
Professional: Asking for references. Unprofessional: Saying you are too well known to need to provide them.
Professional: Being on time, or calling when you are going to be late. Unprofessional: Showing up late or not at all without calling.
Professional: Never bringing up a models weight. Unprofessional: Telling a model they are fat, or that they should think about losing weight. EXCEPTION - It is unprofessional for a model to flip out on their agent/manager - if he/she tells the model they need to lose weight or get in shape!
Professional: Offering suggestions to help a photographer with their shoot. Unprofessional: Telling a photographer how to do his/her job.
Professional: Asking permission before moving/adjusting a models wardrobe/body. Unprofessional: Touching a model with more than two fingers to adjust something, EVER.
Professional: Asking for TFP when you have no experience. Unprofessional: Expecting to get paid when you have no experience.

Well, its about 11:49pm and I am taking a break from editing photos. I just activated by new XM Radio and am listening to a talk show, which is really really cool. I will probably be up late, but with work coming at 8am, not too late tonight. I wanted to pick a modeling subject to cover tonight and I found a doosey!
Exclusive contracts. What I fail to understand is how any model could be persuaded to sign an exclusive contract that does not guarantee huge $$$$. And come on, lets be serious folks, if the agency isn't 5+ years in business with a national track record of magazine covers and million dollar ad campaigns, then you don't sign exclusive with them. And when you stop and really evaluate your career in the 21st century, you really need more options. There are maybe 20 agencies in the US worth signing exclusive to, and 99.99% of the models out there will never get signed with them anyways. Just look at SI's swimsuit model search or even Americas Next Top Model, and you will see how few models actually get signed to an exclusive contract. And those are the TOP .01% of all models out there. Just remember that when Joe Schmoe Agency says they want you to sign exclusive contracts, just walk away! If they want you exclusive, tell them to put their money where there mouth is, and then maybe you'll consider them.........

Its 8pm and I am as usual editing photos. With OMP's upcoming image size changes, I need to work on hundreds of photos previously uploaded to models profiles. I will be up, again as usual, until 4am editing photos, taking breaks to answer emails, and watching CSI. I just watched 60 Minutes and a thought struck me. The woes of the big car companies is really our own fault. Not mine or any member of my family as we always buy American, but I think you should look hard in the mirror and remember that every time someone buys a foreign car, they are putting their family members, friends and probably their next door neighbor out of a job. I realize their are many things we don't make, and buying them is fine, but come on people, don't we even have pride in our own country?? We as Americans owe it to our friends, and families and children to buy products that "WE" make. Well thats my rant for the night, now back to editing I go...........

I have 3 models here right now, Amanda H, Natalie and Lauren. Its really a marvel to see how nice, not-catty, professional models interact with each other. I am shooting 2 of them, and the other is visiting and offering helpful advice to the newer models which is just so cool. Natalie is new, but poses better than alot of the pros I've worked with. Lauren loves to clean up after every set, wow, a model that picks up afterwards, a miracle I tell you. Well they are ready for me to shoot more so back to the fun!
